Embroidered amulet for a baby. [Eastern Europe, 19th century].
Blue silk fabric with colored embroidery. Used for covering a baby in a cradle. In the center are illustrations of fish against "ayin hara", with embroidered acronym of the verse "Ben Porat Yosef Ben Porat alei ayin". [A well-known "segula" for protection]. Another circular embroidered inscription: "Shlaf mein kind zei gezunt" [Yiddish for: Sleep my child, be healthy]. The inscriptions and illustrations are bordered by colored artistic embroidery: branches, leaves and flowers.
