Personal document collection of the translator and poet, Eliyahu Meytus (1893-1982). Meytus was born in Kishinev, learned at a “Heder” and studied with private tutors. He graduated from high school in Odessa, continued his education at the Sorbonne University in Paris and at the St. Petersburg University. Meytus directed the Hebrew high school (Ha-Gimnasia Ha-Ivrit) of Soroki (Serbia) since 1920 and taught at the teachers’seminar in Biasi, Romania. He moved to Eretz Israel in 1935 where he taught in high schools. Wrote poems and translated literary, mainly from Yiddish, French and Russian.
The collection includes: a handwritten list by Meytus, “My Chronicles”; a high school graduation diploma from Odessa, 1910; a handwritten Ketuba celebrating Meytus’s union with his wife, Lea, (Ungheni, Moldova), 1921; a student certificate from the St. Petersburg University, 1917; 5 documents relating to his educational endeavors in Romania; a photograph of the Meytus family; a tree donation JNF certificate; a photograph from the Eschweg D.P camp.
