The Kuppe (The Pile), Peretz Markish. Kultur Lige Publishers, Warsaw, 1921. First edition. The composition on the cover was made by Henryk Berlewi, illustrating the name of Markish's poem, visually resembling a pile. The obvious brutality and coarseness of the composition's elements – the title-letters and the triangles beneath them - match the tragic mood of the poem, and the purposely provoking naturalist anti-esthetic quality which is the main tone in the poem's description of the pogrom's victims. The murdered Jews were "Piled up" in the town square.
