Vessel for ritual hand washing. [Eastern Europe, 19th century].
Cast copper, two copper handles attached to the side of the vessel with rivets.
Beaten work of a form of a fish on bottom (can be seen from inside and outside of vessel). Fish motifs on a vessel for hand washing are a known custom among Eastern European Jews. Apparently, it was a symbol of protection from evil spirits and demons which according to tradition exist near water.
