Targum Ha-Haftarot – Yemenite Manuscript

Opening: $150
Sold for: $275
Including buyer's premium
Targum Ha-haftarot manuscript. Yemen, [1881?].
On the first page the title reads “I will begin to write the translation of all the Haftarot in the Torah, with the help of the great and almighty G-d”.
There is a faded colophon on the last page about the end of the writing [in 1881?] and an ornate rabbinical signature Yemenite style (unidentified).
This manuscript was intended for the person who would read the translation of each verse to the public after it was read by the Ba’al Kore [in Hebrew]. This is an antique custom that goes back to the time of the Gemara and was preserved in the Yemenite congregations only. [There are manuscripts in which the translation appears with each original verse (see “Kedem” catalogue, auction 4, items 512-513; auction 8, items 458-459), this manuscript has the Aramaic translation alone].
[132] Leaves, 16.5 cm. Fair condition. Stains, light moth damage on the inner margins, tears on the outside borders of the leaves, some of them have been restored. Original leather binding.
