The author, Rebbe Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk (1730-1782), a prominent disciple of the Baal Shem Tov and later of the Maggid of Mezeritch, was a Chassidic leader in Lithuania and Belorussia, and headed the Chassidic immigration to Eretz Israel in 1777. His disciples include R. Avraham of Kalisk, R. Shneur Zalman of Liadi and others.
