On the margins of the paper appears an (embossed) stamp of the photography studio: "Burr Shanghai China", and beneath it, in Ezra's handwriting: "Token of love", signed and dated: "Shanghai, 6 November 1912".
Elias Benjamin Ezra (1883-1936), born in Iraq, immigrated to Shanghai in his youth. In 1903 he founded the Shanghai Zionist Association and headed it. A year later, in 1904, he started publishing the journal of the association, "Mevaser Yisrael", and served as its chief editor for thirty years, until his death.
Photograph: approx. 9x6.5 cm. Mounted on paper (11x16.5 cm) attached at its upper edge to cardboard. Good condition. A small tear to the edge of the cardboard.
