A Journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem at Easter, A.D. 1697, by Henry Maundrell. Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1703. First edition.
A description of a journey made by the English cleric Henry Maundrell from Aleppo (Syria) to Jerusalem. Accompanied by nine engraved-plates (five of them folded) – plans and illustrations of views and sites in Syria, Palestine and Lebanon (a view of Aleppo, Solomon's Pools, Mount Carmel, Mount Tabor, the Temple of Baalbek and more). An additional engraving on the title page.
In 1697, Henry Maundrell (1665-1701), chaplain to the "Levant Company" in Aleppo, and fourteen companions, went on a three-months Easter pilgrimage to Jerusalem. They travelled from Aleppo, passed through the Syrian and Lebanese coastline to Acre and from there, via the Jezreel valley and Samaria to Jerusalem. The book documenting the journey was published after Maundrell's death and is considered a reliable documentation of Palestine. It was reprinted in many editions and translated into various languages [for additional information, see: "Kardom, Bi-Monthly for Guides" (Hebrew), issue 13-14, January 1981. P. 79].
[8] leaves, 142 pp, [4] leaves + [9] engraved plates. 21.5 cm. Good condition. Stains. Small tears to the edges of one of the plates (not affecting the engravings). Long English notes (old; about Palestine and Syria) on the endpapers. Bookplate on the inside front binding. Original leather binding, damaged and slightly worn.
