Letter from Rabbi Joseph Koenigsberg from Radom (Poland), to Rabbi David (Weisbrod-Halachmi). Radom, [c. 1936].
In his letter, he tells of the wonderful development of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin despite the demise of the Head of the Yeshiva, Rabbi Meir Shapira. His reply to the suggestion of opening a branch of the Yeshiva in "Zichron Meir" in Israel: "Our teacher already wanted to establish a Yeshiva in Eretz Yisrael… but not on a trivial scale which would belie the ideals of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin and it's founder, it is impossible to approach such a monumental venture in small and establish a Chassidic retreat or Bet Midrash serving just a handful of students. The vision of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin… demands a more farsighted approach, to create a Torah centre for the elite of Torah youth; the Torah leaders of the future".
Rabbi Joseph Koenigsberg, a wealthy and learned member of the Radom community, director of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin, a position he fulfilled without material reward. During the Holocaust, he continued his charitable deeds and support of Torah in the Warsaw Ghetto. Of the masterminds behind the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, perished under the hands of the Nazis.
