A book, catalogues and booklets related to Herwarth Walden (1879-1941), a Jewish-German artist, curator, founder of the periodical "The Storm" (Der Sturm), as well as a publishing house and art gallery.
The book "Expressionism, the turning point in art" published by Walden in 1918 (item no. 1), includes essays about the expressionist movement and the prominent artists of the movement with reproductions of important works. The book also includes two original woodcuts by the artists Arnold Topp and Jacoba von Heemskerck and two lino-cuts by the artist Rudolf Bauer. In addition offered here are catalogues of exhibitions and booklets about modern art published by Walden, as well as a catalogue of an exhibition of his wife Nell Walden's art collection, exhibited in Basel, Switzerland in 1943, two years after his death.
Walden, born as Georg Levine, was married for a decade to the Jewish-German poet Elsa Lasker Schuller, who gave him the name by which he was known. Being a communist, he fled Germany in the early 1930s fearing the Nazis, and went to the Soviet Union, where he was persecuted due to his relations with Avant-garde art. He died in the Soviet prison in 1941.
