First edition of one of the most important books on photography of the 1920s. Includes the article "Mechanism and Expression" by historian, photographer and art critic Franz Roh and 76 reproduction plates of photographs, most from the Stuttgart exhibition Film und Foto [an exhibition held in 1929 presenting the New Vision movement, which emerged in the 1920s]. The book includes works by Lazar (El) Lissitzky, Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, John Heartfield, Dziga Vertov, Walter Peterhans and many others. Book cover designed by designer and typographer Jan Tschichold.
On the front cover is a self-portrait of El Lissitzky.
18 pp, 76 pp (plates of photographs), 29 cm. Good-fair condition. Dampness and light damage to pages. Erased stamp on one leaf. Damage to cover - stains, tears (torn spine, cover somewhat loose), adhesive tape to margins.
