Handwritten copy of a document concerning renewal of privileges granted to Jews of Modena (originally granted on April 28 1750) on behalf of Duke Francesco III d'Este, Modena, July 30 1750, Italian.
Renewal of privileges was done by the end of a period of ten years, for a period of fifty years with an option to renew and update every ten years (for payment of one hundred and twenty Doppie and five hundred Scudi). It is written in the document that the authorities consider improving the privileges in view of the proper conduct of Jews and their loyalty and obedience.
About twenty paragraphs appear in the document, with reference to various rights: permit to manage synagogues, to expand and refurbish them and hold ceremonies and prayers within them; permit allowing doctors to act in Jewish Ghettoes; permit to run inns and to slaughter within the Ghetto; permit to use cemeteries, including laying tombstones and inscribing Jewish symbols; prohibiting the conversion of babies to Christianity; prohibiting performing public shows which mock the Jews and more.
