A collection of photographs of the reception in a synagogue in Tel Aviv, in honor of the appointment of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef as Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv. [1969]. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef (1920-2013), born in Baghdad, at a very young age ascended to Jerusalem, was already famous at a young age for his Torah genius and began to write and teach Torah to multitudes. In 1948, he travelled to serve in the rabbinate in Egypt and on his return to Israel in 1951 served in the rabbinate of Petach Tikva. In 1958, he was appointed member of the Jerusalem Beit Din and in Tishrei 1965 was appointed member of the Great Beit Din together with Rabbi Elyashiv and other elder rabbis of his times. In 1969, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef was appointed Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv-Jaffa and in 1973 was appointed Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel. These photographs were taken at the ceremony in honor of Rabbi Ovadia’s appointment in a synagogue in Tel Aviv. He is dressed in an ornamental rabbinical cloak and is wearing a rabbinical headdress. He can be seen in the photographs holding an open Sefer Torah, another photo of the official cantor blowing the shofar and other photographs taken at the reception. The photographs and the ceremony are similar to the photographs taken at another ceremony which took place in another synagogue in Tel Aviv, see attached material. 10 photographs 9X14 cm.
