Collection of 10 Pfennig coins from the Lodz Ghetto– Experimental Type

Opening: $2,200
Unsold
16 coins in the value of 10 Pfennig, from the Lodz Ghetto, 1942.
Aluminum and magnesium alloy.
Obverse: denomination –"10", the inscription "Der Aelteste der Juden" and a Star of David bordered by oak leaves.
Reverse: "Litzmannstadt Getto 1942", in the center a Star of David decorated with corncobs.
The coins presented here were minted from a type issued in the Lodz Ghetto but were archived in view of the resentment expressed by Hans Biebow, the ghetto commander on behalf of the Nazi regime. Biebow ordered Chaim Rumkowski to remove the oak leaves and corncobs and change the figure "10" so as to differentiate it from the figures embossed on German coins.
Such coins are rare. In an article by Andrzej Piwowarczyk, "The inside story of the 10 Pfennig coin from the Ghetto Litzmannstadt" (1963) the author mentions that only 90 such coins are known.
Diameter: 20 mm. Fair-poor condition.
Provenance: the estate of Nachman Blumenthal (holocaust survivor and holocaust researcher, of the Warsaw Jewish Historic Institute founders and its first director).
