The Book of Esther and the Book of Ruth, in English, embossed for reading by the blind. This method was customary before Braille, invented in France, reached the United States.
The book was published by Julius Reinhold Friedlander (1803-1839), the founder and director of the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind. Friedlander, a Jew born in Upper Silesia, died one year after the book was published, after serving as the principal of the institute for six years, at the young age of 36.
