Mordechai Ehrenpreis (1869-1951), Hebrew author, rabbi and Zionist. In 1897, he was appointed "secretary of the committee for preparations of the Zionist Congress" (before the first Zionist Congress in Basel) and in this capacity he provided the Hebrew version of the invitation to the congress complying with Herzl's wishes. From 1900-1940, he served as Chief Rabbi of Bulgaria and later immigrated to Sweden and became Chief Rabbi of Stockholm. During WWII, he was involved in efforts to rescue Hungarian Jews and used his connections to influence the King of Sweden to appoint Raoul Wallenberg as a rescue agent.
Enclosed: A letter handwritten by Esther Ehrenpreis (Mordechai's wife, who attended the first Zionist Congress in Basel) on a printed greeting card, addressed to Blumental. German; two newspaper clippings.
[1] leaf, 488, [1] page, [1] leaf + [15] plates with photos on both sides, 21.5 cm. Good condition. Stains (primarily to margins and first and last pages). Minor creases to several pages. Tear to one leaf. Pen scribble to one page. Light worming to binding and to back endpaper. Worn, slightly blemished binding.
