Avigdor Arikha – Five Letters, 1951-1953

Opening: $350
Unsold
Five letters handwritten by the painter Avigdor Arikha, addressed to Peretz (Fritz) Leshem, Consul of Israel in London, whose apartment in Jerusalem was rented to Arikha. Jerusalem and Paris, 1951-1953.
Original woodcuts by Arikha have been printed on the upper part of two of the leaves, one in brown and the other in black. Arikha (1929-2010) was 22-24 years old while writing the letters and just at the beginning of his artistic career. In the letters, dealing in fact with the relations between a landlord and a tenant, Arikha also expresses some of the thoughts, contemplations and hopes of a young artist. Attached: a letter from Leshem, receipt and a note with rent calculations. Sizes and conditions vary.
