Commentary on Rashi on the Torah by Rabbi Natan Shapira – the Maharnash. Venice, [1593].
Abridged edition of the book Imrei Shefer, printed in Lublin, 1591. The Maharnash, a descendant of Rashi, wrote this book, which deals exclusively with the teachings of his grandfather.
Title-page in illuminated frame. Body of book contains engravings of Menorah and Hebrew map of Eretz Israel.
Owner's signature on title-page: Rabbi Chaim Yosef Franco, known as HaRav HeCharif. Rabbi Rachamim Chaim Yosef ben R' Refael Nissim Franco was born in Rhodes 1835, made aliya to Jerusalem in 1868, and was member in rabbinic court of Rabbi Ya'akov Shaul Elyashar. He traveled to Europe, Constantinople, and Vienna, on behalf of community in Jerusalem. In Vienna, he was given an audience with King Franz Joseph the first. In 1878 he was appointed as Rabbi of Hebron, where he served until his death in 1900.
