Charles Verlat (1824-1890), Bedouin Girl, [ca. 1875-1877]. Oil on Canvas. Signed: "Charles Verlat / Jerusalem". 70.5X100 cm. Framed, 91X122 cm with frame. Minor blemishes. Charles Michel Maria Verlat (1824-1890), born in Antwerp, studied at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts (later becoming a professor of drawing and director of the academy). He left for Paris in 1850 and studied there at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 1875 he travelled to Egypt and Palestine, remaining in Palestine for two years. The people and landscapes of Palestine are the subjects of many of his paintings.
