Arieh Elhanani (1898-1985) was an Israeli architect, artist, and graphic designer, winner of the 1973 Israel Prize for architecture for his "contribution toward molding Israeli culture." Among other things, he designed pavilions and buildings for the Levant Fair in the Port of Tel Aviv, and created the "Flying Camel" logo for the fair, as well as the emblems of the IDF and the Palmach.
Approx. 95.5X65.5 cm. Good condition. Few minor stains. Minor tears to edges, mended. Open tear to upper left corner, repaired (with recoloring). Poster linen-backed for display and preservation.

Included: • Color advertisement (handwritten; lithographic border), for the "Gabriel Grad's music academy in Kovno" (1920s). • Lithographic color advertisement for a concert of Hebrew music and classical music, conducted by Grad (Raseiniai, 1920). • Advertisement for the Benhatov conservatory in Tel Aviv (founded by Grad). • Poster for a concert at the Herzliya Gymnasium – music for poems by Bialik, Zalman Shneur, Tchernichovsky and others, composed by Grad (1925). • Poster for the operetta "Shnei Kuni Leml" (The Flying Matchmaker) by Abraham Goldfaden; music by Gabriel Grad (Tel-Aviv). • Advertisement for the "Popular conservatorium for laborers and clerks", directed by Gabriel Grad (Tel Aviv, 1920s?). • Advertisement for the "celebration in honor of the 60th jubilee of H.N. Gabriel Grad (1890-1950), a prominent composer in Jewish Palestine, born in Rietavas (Lithuania). Studied at the Berlin music academy, and during the years 1920-1922 established in Kovno an academy for Hebrew and classical music. In 1922, he returned to Berlin where he founded a musical ensemble with the violinist Alfred Wittenberg and the cellist Felix-Robert Mendelsohn. He immigrated to Palestine in 1924 and established in Tel-Aviv the Benhatov (Hebrew: anagram of Beethoven) conservatorium. He wrote melodies for numerous poems by Bialik and the anthem of the Tel-Aviv Port.
Enclosed : • Two advertising posters for a concert of popular Jewish music, held in Kovno in 1921 (Grad's name is not mentioned). • Watercolor painting of the Tower of David in Jerusalem (hand-signed and captioned in Hebrew: "Painting for the opera Judith and Holofernes by Gabriel and Rachel Grad, painting by Franz Schlitzer, Tel-Aviv, 24.xi.46". • Passes issued to Gabriel Grad (during his military service?) (Russian; 1917); and additional notes.

Lithographic poster celebrating Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin's 70th birthday, issued by the Israeli Communist Party. Featuring Stalin's portrait at center, over the inscription "70 Years, 21.XII.1949" (Hebrew); at left, the Soviet Union flag flies, alongside a blue-and-white flag, with a white dove – presumably after a lithograph titled "La Colombe" (The Dove) created by Pablo Picaso that same year, which served as the logo of the 1949 Conference for World Peace.

The illustrator Asher Dikstein (Ein Dor; 1943-2021), was one of the founding fathers of the Israeli comics industry. He edited the magazines "Bambi, " "Buki, " and "Harpatkot La-No'ar"; illustrated the comics series "Ha-Aretz Shelanu" ["Our Land"] by Yariv Amaziah (pen name of author Pinchas Sadeh), as well as books of the series "Hasambah"; created comic strips for the children's magazines "Davar Liladim" and "Etzbaoni"; in the latter capacity, he illustrated the tales of "Lassie" (translated from the English); illustrated book covers for the pocket book series "Patrick Kim, " "Bill Carter, " and "Ringo"; illustrated posters, and more. Became religiously observant later in life, settled in Safed, and began illustrating comic strips geared toward the Haredi public.

This Bible edition was edited by the Flemish Catholic scholar Johannes Henten (1499-1566) and proofed based on dozens of Vulgate manuscripts. Heavily influenced by French printer Robert Estienne's Vulgate, this edition was first printed in 1547 in Leuven, Flanders. Introduction by editor Johannes Henten (first printed in the 1547 edition) and by St. Jerome, famed translator of the Vulgate; indices at end.
