Large micrographic print made by Levi van Gelder; hand-colored. [New York, ca. 1865]. English and some Hebrew.
Impressive and detailed print incorporating dozens of medallions with biblical illustrations, texts from the Bible and from the prayers for the Days of Awe, written in fine micrographic writing (English and Hebrew), and a number of attached pieces of paper, printed in red and gold (collage).
The scenes in the print include Yonah thrown into the sea, the vision of Zechariah, Yitzchak blessing Yaakov, Yaakov's dream, Moshe with the Tablets of the Law, the Israelites collecting manna, Eliyahu's ascent to heaven, and more.
Due to the artist's affiliation with the Freemason movement, many of his works incorporate elements related to the movement. This print incorporates, in one of the upper medallions, alongside the pillars of Yachin and Boaz, the symbol of the Freemasons (the square and compasses), the "Eye of Providence", and other Masonic symbols.
Levi David van Gelder (1816-1878) was born in Amsterdam and worked there as a printer. Among the graphic works he created in Amsterdam we know of at least four "Mizrachs", made in Van Gelder's unique style – a meticulous micrographic work incorporating texts and illustrations alongside large text-boxes (sometimes on attached pieces of paper). In the early 1860s (ca. 1860-1864) Van Gelder immigrated with his family to the USA, where he created the present print. In this print and in other works he created in the USA, he incorporated English texts (unlike the works he created in Amsterdam, which he printed in Dutch, at times with some Hebrew).
Approx. 118X90 cm. Fair-good condition. Abrasions and tears (some professionally repaired, with minor damage to text and illustrations). Stains. Margins mounted to acid-free paper, mounted in turn on a linen sheet. Framed.

Illustrated Esther scroll; reproduction of a scroll with elaborately-illustrated engraved borders, presumably printed in Amsterdam in the 18th century. [Place of printing not indicated, 20th century].
Ink on parchment; printed illustrations; watercolor.
Scroll with printed illustrations, hand-colored, after a scroll with engraved illustrations printed in Amsterdam in the early 18th century. This style of illustrated scrolls was very popular in European communities, and they were printed in many variations.
The Megillah blessings are surrounded by nine narrative scenes from the Book of Esther. The text columns are separated by wreathed ornamented pillars and putti in a neo-classical style. A series of four elaborate landscapes are presented in cartouches above the text columns, and detailed narrative scenes of the Purim story unfold along the lower border; including a scene depicting Haman shooting an arrow at the zodiac – representing the lots he cast to determine which month should be selected for the destruction of the Jewish people. As is prevalent in these scrolls, the names of the ten sons of Haman are accompanied by a corresponding illustration.
Height: 19.5 cm. Good condition. Printing defects.
For a similar scroll see: The Stieglitz Collection – Masterpieces of Jewish Art, by Chaya Benjamin. The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, 1987.

Shnoder Book – record book for synagogue pledges. [Italy, ca. 19th century].
Italian square script. Thick, high-quality paper, with hundreds of holes on each leaf (most leaves contain some 744 holes), for marking the pledges made by the community members on Shabbat and festivals, when writing is prohibited.

Names of synagogue honors are handwritten at the beginning of each line (each leaf contains different honors, presumably according to the habits of the specific community member).
Inscriptions in Italian on the final page (with some Hebrew) – accounts for "Isaaco Modena" and "Samuel Formiggini".
[81] leaves. 34.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains and wear. Tears and repairs. Old binding, with new spine and endpapers.

Shnoder Book – record book for synagogue pledges. [Oldenzaal, Holland, ca. first half of 20th century].
The record book contains printed tables with numbers (sums of money). A half circle was cut out under each number, so that the gabbai could mark which sum was pledged on Shabbat or festivals, without transgressing the prohibition of writing. The various leaves record pledges made to the synagogue as well as to the community's charity societies. The names of the community members are handwritten in Latin characters (the names in this ledger correspond with families known to have been members of the small Jewish community in Oldenzaal, thus the ledger is presumed to have belonged to the Oldenzaal synagogue).
10 printed leaves, with a blank leaf between every two printed leaves. 33.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains and wear. Tears to one leaf. Original binding, rubbed, with new spine and endpapers.
