Shnoder Book – record book for synagogue pledges. [Oldenzaal, Holland, ca. first half of 20th century].
The record book contains printed tables with numbers (sums of money). A half circle was cut out under each number, so that the gabbai could mark which sum was pledged on Shabbat or festivals, without transgressing the prohibition of writing. The various leaves record pledges made to the synagogue as well as to the community's charity societies. The names of the community members are handwritten in Latin characters (the names in this ledger correspond with families known to have been members of the small Jewish community in Oldenzaal, thus the ledger is presumed to have belonged to the Oldenzaal synagogue).
10 printed leaves, with a blank leaf between every two printed leaves. 33.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains and wear. Tears to one leaf. Original binding, rubbed, with new spine and endpapers.
