Piskei Halachot by R. Menachem of Recanati. Bologna: Silk Weaver's Guild, [1538]. First edition.
The author, R. Menachem son of Binyamin Recanati (1250-1310), was an early Italian Kabbalist. The present work, comprising his halachic rulings, served as an important source for halachic authorities of subsequent generations.
Signature on the title page (possibly of R. Eliyahu Yisrael Rabbi of Alexandria, author of Kol Eliyahu and Kiseh Eliyahu). Stamp.

This edition of Sefer HaMitzvot was printed as part of the famous edition of Mishneh Torah, brought to print by the Torah leader R. Meir Katzenellenbogen – Maharam Padua (1473?-1565).
The text was carefully corrected by Maharam Padua and his son R. Shmuel Yehuda Katzenellenbogen.
Maharam Padua also sponsored the printing. His glosses were however stolen by Giustiniani, a rival Venice printer, who produced his own edition of Mishneh Torah (Venice, 1550) and sold it at a lower price. A great dispute ensued, and the Rama issued a ban on Giustiniani's edition. This dispute eventually drew the Pope's intervention, resulting in the decree of the burning of the Talmud in Italy on Rosh Hashanah 1553.
