Sefer HaMitzvot by the Rambam, with Hasagot of the Ramban (objections to Sefer HaMitzvot). [Venice]: Bragadin, [1550].
Three-crowned printers' device of Bragadin on final leaf, and colophon with details of printing.
This edition of Sefer HaMitzvot was printed as part of the famous edition of Mishneh Torah, brought to print by the Torah leader R. Meir Katzenellenbogen – Maharam Padua (1473?-1565).
The text was carefully corrected by Maharam Padua and his son R. Shmuel Yehuda Katzenellenbogen.
Maharam Padua also sponsored the printing. His glosses were however stolen by Giustiniani, a rival Venice printer, who produced his own edition of Mishneh Torah (Venice, 1550) and sold it at a lower price. A great dispute ensued, and the Rama issued a ban on Giustiniani's edition. This dispute eventually drew the Pope's intervention, resulting in the decree of the burning of the Talmud in Italy on Rosh Hashanah 1553.
41, [1] leaves. 39.5 cm. Fair condition. Stains (including dampstains) and wear. Tears. Worming. Inscriptions. Stamp. Bookplates. Without binding.
