Long handwritten, signed letter by R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. [Jerusalem], Nissan, 1961.
The letter is written to his friend R. Chaim Kreiswirth, rabbi of Antwerp, after the latter had gifted him with the newly-edited version of "Responsa Rabbenu Chaim Cohen" (by R. Kreiswirth's ancestor, R. Chaim Hacohen Rappaport, rabbi of Lviv). In his letter, R. Elyashiv thanks R. Kreiswirth for the gift and adds comments to the sections regarding the laws of Korban Pesach (the Paschal lamb) and the proper time for the removal of chametz (leaven). The letter closes with blessings for the upcoming Passover holiday: "I am signing with blessings for a happy and kosher Passover, and may we merit to reach other holidays rejoicing in G-d's service in the rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem …".
R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910-2012) was a leading halachic decisor for more than 70 years, known for his exceptional diligence and deep and thorough knowledge of all facets of Torah, enabling him to rule clearly on every matter. During the last 20 years of his life, he led Torah Jewry in Israel and abroad. However, even during his earlier years he was involved in the rabbinic and halachic matters of various communities. R. Elyashiv's students printed his Torah novellae in a series of books of his "comments" on Talmudic tractates that were garnered from his lectures. They also printed a sampling of hundreds of his thousands of responsa in the five volume "Kovetz Teshuvot". The above responsum is printed in Sefer Kovetz Teshuvot, IV, section 47.
The recipient of the letter, R. Chaim Kreiswirth (1918-2002), known as a brilliant Torah scholar, was a student of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin and a son-in-law of R. Avraham Grodzinski, mashgiach of Yeshivat Slabodka. He officiated as rabbi of the Orthodox Jewish community in Antwerp ("Kehillat Machzikei Hadas") and was known as one of the great Torah leaders of the previous generation. His tremendous Torah scholarship was equaled by his kindness and generosity, and he became known as the father of orphans and widows, as well as being deeply involved in financing marriages for the poor. His long friendship with R. Elyashiv dated to the years when they would learn together in Beit Medrash Ohel Sara, (ca. 1940-1950, when R. Kreiswirth lived in Jerusalem before accepting the position of rabbi of Antwerp upon the advice of the Chazon Ish).
Official stationery. 20 cm. Written on both sides, approximately 55 written lines, with erasures and additions between the lines. Good condition. Fold lines.

Letter (18 lines), handwritten and signed by the leading Torah scholar R. "Shlomo Zalman Auerbach". Jerusalem, Av 1955.
Sent to his friend R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. Congratulations for the wedding of R. Elyashiv's [second] daughter: "...I would like to inform him that I received his invitation to participate in the wedding of his daughter, but since I will be travelling please G-d today to Tiberias to celebrate my son's engagement (R. Avraham Dov Rabbi of Tiberias, son-in-law of R. Werner of Tiberias), I am therefore hurrying to wish him from the depth of my heart Mazel Tov wishes, may the wedding take place at an auspicious time, may Torah and greatness be combined at their table for posterity, and may he and his wife rejoice from them and all their descendants, all being great Torah leaders and servants of G-d, in happiness and joy…".
R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (1910-1995) was the dean of the Kol Torah Yeshiva and leading posek of his times. In his youth, R. Shlomo Zalman was a household member of R. Zelig Reuven Bengis, head of the Eida HaChareidit, where he befriended R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, who was also a disciple of R. Bengis and frequenter of his house. The elderly scholar cherished the two young scholars, and held them in great esteem, predicting them a future as leading Halachic authorities of the generation. In time, R. Shlomo Zalman indeed became one of the leading poskim and the foremost authority in Halachic matters, such as medicine and halacha. His pleasant ways and refinement earnt him the veneration of all sects of Orthodox Judaism, which was expressed at his funeral attended by some 300,000 people.
R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach's connection with R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv extended over a period of sixty years, and they often conferred with each other on halachic and public matters which were on the agenda. Several years after this letter was written, they became related by marriage when R. Shlomo Zalman's son R. Azriel Auerbach married R. Yosef Shalom's (fifth) daughter.
Postcard, 14 cm. Very good condition. The address and name of sender were handwritten and signed by R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach.

Letter (approx. 16 lines), handwritten and signed by R. Aharon Yehuda Leib Steinman, addressed to R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. [Bnei Brak, ca. 1960s].
Investigation of a serious halachic question, regarding a concern of Kerut Shafcha and its proscription from marriage. The letter was written at the behest of R. Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky (the Steipler), who bid R. Aharon Leib Steinman to relay to R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv all the details known to him on the case, so that the latter can issue a halachic ruling. In this letter, R. Aharon Yehuda Leib Steinman describes his involvement in the case, and his approaching various Mohelim together with the person concerned, to investigate the issue (the letter seems to indicate an instance of a congenital defect known as Hypospadias). The letter discloses R. Steinman's great devotion to help this person obtain a permission to marry, and the Steipler's confidence in him to investigate this complex case.
R. Aharon Leib Yehuda Leib Steinman, a foremost leader of Orthodox Jewry and chairman of the Moetzet Gedolei HaTorah of the Degel HaTorah party, served as dean of the Ponovezh yeshiva for young boys from 1955 and head of Kollel Ponovezh from 1965. For many years, R. Aharon Yehuda Leib lived in great modesty, yet he was known amongst the rabbis of Bnei Brak already then as a prominent halachic authority, and the Steipler would consult with him on complex halachic questions (particularly in halachic issues relating to medicine). He was held in high esteem already by the Chazon Ish, who would reputedly stand up in his honor. R. Steinman became known to the wider public only in 1988, after the establishment of the Degel HaTorah party, and his appointment by R. Shach as member of the Moetzet Gedolei HaTorah. Subsequently, his impact on public leadership, educational and yeshiva concerns greatly increased. After R. Shach's passing in 2001, he was recognized as his heir and successor as leader of Lithuanian Jewry together with the halachic authority of the generation, R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv of Jerusalem (1910-2012). This letter presents early correspondence between two prominent Torah figures of Lithuanian Jewry. [This letter was probably written ca. 1965, several years before R. Steinman's eldest son, R. Shraga Steinman, married R. Elyashiv's eldest granddaughter. This letter does not mention any marital connections, since it was composed several years prior their descendants' marriage, in the late 1960s].
[1] leaf. Approx. 20 cm. Good condition. Minor marginal tears. Name of the young man involved deleted with correction fluid.

Lengthy letter (3 pages), handwritten and signed by R. Ovadia Yosef. Jerusalem, Elul 1958.
Letter containing responsa and wishes for a good year, sent to his friend R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, in response to R. Elyashiv's comments on his book Responsa Yabia Omer part I, laws of Shofar blowing.
R. Ovadia Yosef (1920-2013) was born in Baghdad and immigrated to Jerusalem with his parents at a very young age. Already in his youth, he was renowned for his brilliance, and began composing books and teaching Torah to multitudes. In 1948, he travelled to Egypt to serve in the rabbinate and upon his return to Israel in 1951, he served as rabbi of Petach Tikva. In 1958, he was appointed dayan in the Jerusalem Beit Din, and in Tishrei 1965, in the Great Beit Din together with R. Elyashiv and other leading rabbis of his times. In 1969, R. Elyashiv's house every Shabbat eve, to confer with him on various halachic topics which arose during the Beit Din sittings. In 1973, R. Elyashiv publicly promoted R. Ovadia Yosef's candidacy for Chief Rabbi of Israel, through advertisements in Chareidi press and other means. R. Elyashiv's letter to R. Ovadia Yosef of Tishrei 1972 was publicized, in which he firmly instructed him to apply for the position, insisting that under the circumstances, it is not only permitted but required.
3 written pages, approx. 22 cm. Approx. 77 written lines. Good-fair condition. Minor tear to the center of the page, and light dampstains.

In this addition, R. Natansohn instructs to allocate after his passing 5000 Krone to charity; 40% of this sum would benefit the community's Jewish hospital and the rest should be distributed to impoverished relatives, the needy of the town, other poor people and the Passover fund for the destitute. Two addenda are enclosed with the document, testifying the hospital's receipt of the document and its intention to fulfill the instructions, signed and stamped by community members, fund administrators, members of the hospital administration and witnesses.
