"The sounds of mirth and rejoicing…" - handwritten, decorated sonnet in honor of the wedding of David Avraham ben Shimshon Chai and Simcha Malka bat Yehuda Avraham Yisrael Morpurgo. [Italy, ca. 19th century].
The handwritten page is decorated with a floral border and stamped designs of vases and plants. At the top of the page is an introduction in Italian semi-cursive script. thereafter follows a sonnet in honor of the groom. The sonnet is signed: "from the mouth of babes".
The father of the groom may possibly be the wealthy philanthropist Shimshon Chai of Ancona who lived in Pesaro. Yehuda Avraham Morpurgo was listed among the signatories of Sefer Chaim Va'Chessed (R. Chaim Yitzchak Moussafia, Livorno, 1844) as a resident of Ancona. See enclosed material.

The first page is framed with a decorative frame, topped by the Tables of the Law (the decoration of the page is incomplete). Page [6b] contains a colorful border for the ten plagues, with space left for illustrations. Page [8b] contains illustrations of Matzah and Marror (bitter herbs). Page 10a contains decorative borders and columns, with Italian instructions (in Hebrew lettering) for the simanim of the Seder. The end of the Hagaddah contains the piyyutim "Adir Hu", "Echad Mi Yodea", and "Chad Gadya". The colophon on the final page states: "Completed… by Shlomo ben Shmuel Levi".

The first four pages of the manuscript contain many inscriptions and scribbles, including several ownership inscriptions, some partially crossed out: "This grammar book belongs to me, Rephael David Ashkenazi, Casale, 1726". A further listing reads: "Rabbi Baki", evidently a family member of the well-known Kabbalist R. Shimshon Baki of Casale, teacher of the Rabach, who passed away in 1691.

"Me'on HaShoalim, by the sage R. Moshe Moshe Rieti "; contains: Barchi Nafshi - Tochecha (reproach) by R. Bechaye, Vidui Gadol by Rabbeinu Nissim, Seder HaAvodah according to Sephardi rites, translated into Italian by Devorà Ascarelli; and two poems by Devorà Ascarelli. Venice: Daniel Zanetti, [1601].

The translator, Devorà Ascarelli, born in Rome, translated the poem of Tochecha by Rabbeinu Bechaye and the subsequent sections from Hebrew to Italian. She added two Italian poems (sonnets) which she herself wrote to the book.
Her name is noted on the title page as the translator and at the end of the book an anonymous poem was added in her honor. This book is the only source of information about the poet Devorà Ascarelli. From this book, we can learn that her husband was called Yosef and that she resided in Rome. No other details are known of this woman.
