[Orden de Roshasanah y Kipur]. Machzor for Rosh Hashanah and for Yom Kippur, translated into Spanish by Abraham ben Salomon Usque. Printed by the author. Ferrara, 1553. Spanish, with a few Hebrew titles.
In the mid-16th century, Ferrara was the spiritual center of Italian Jewry. Ferrara rulers, the dukes of the House of Este sympathized with the Jewish Marranos from Spain and Portugal, and under their rule, many Jews returned to Judaism. The city housed a separate Spanish community, several synagogues and a printing press for Hebrew, Spanish and Portuguese books.
The printer of this machzor, Abraham ben Salomon Usque, was born in Portugal and escaped to Ferrara in 1543, fleeing the Portuguese Inquisition. In Ferrara he worked with the printer Yom Tov Levi Athias (one of the Spanish Marranos). The same year that this machzor was printed, the two printed the Ferrara Bible, the first Bible with a Ladino translation in Latin letters. (The Bible was printed in two identical editions with the exception of one difference: One was intended for a Christian audience and therefore was dedicated to the Duke of Ferrara and the other was intended for a Jewish audience and was dedicated to Gracia Mendes Nasi).
XXV-CCLXII leaves (mispagination, i.e XXV-CCLXXII). Total of 248 leaves. Lacking 24 leaves at the beginning (including the title page). Good-fair condition. Many stains. The first leaf and several leaves at the end of the book are detached. On some pages, verses were erased with ink (apparently, ancient censor erasures). Ancient leather-covered binding, worn, torn and partially detached.

Siddur. Sephardi rite - siddur for everyday use and for Festivals. Amsterdam, [1739]. Printed by Naphtali Hirtz Levi. Miniature edition.
Separate title pages for the Festival prayers. Several variants are listed in the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book (Listing 306843). An extra title page has been added to this siddur - not in its proper place - between leaves 219 and 220. The two title-pages vary: The first title page has mention that the book was printed in the home of "Naftali Hirtz Levi", "By the behest of the brothers…Tzemach Ya'akov David, sons of R. Meir Crescas" and on the verso is an introduction signed by the publisher - R. Meir Crescas: "In Amsterdam, I have seen a miniature siddur with unvowelized small lettering and youngsters cannot read the text when praying. I felt their discomfort and have printed this siddur… in the smallest volume ever printed in thin small letters…". On the second title page (which as mentioned above is bound between leaves 219 and 220), the name Crescas does not appear. The same introduction as above appears on the verso, however it is signed "Naphtali Hirtz Levi Rofeh". The explanation is: The book was printed by R. Naphtali Hirtz Levi, but R. Meir Crescas purchased copies of the book, and had the title-page and introduction replaced with one that bore his name and the names of his sons. In some copies, the ordinary title-page (that with the Naphtali Hirtz Levi imprint) was bound in, mistakenly, together with the title-page of R. Meir Crescas (see: Catalogue of the permanent and loan collections of the Jewish Museum, London, edited by R. D. Barnett, London 1974, p. 117).
Another variance exists in this copy which was not recorded in the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book: Leaf 5 is bound again (for the second time), together with the second title page, between leaves 219 and 220.
219, [2], 220-318 leaves. Approximately 6 cm. Good condition. Stains. Original leather binding with gilt ornamentation. Damaged binding.

Machzor with Kavanat HaPaytan, for Shavuot, "According to Ashkenazi tradition and [the traditions] of the rest of the holy congregations", with Yiddish translation and explanations. Amsterdam, [1768]. Printed by the Proops brothers.
Elaborate ancient leather binding, with a gilt dedication by R. Shaul, Rabbi of Hague, and is wife Rebbetzin Dinah, who gave this machzor as a bar-mitzvah gift. Embossed close to the outer frame of the front cover: "Gift from the famous R. Shaul HaLevi and from his wife, Rebbetzin Dinah…". An inscription was added to the inner frame: "from his wife, Rebbetzin Dinah". Embossed on the back cover is a "self-dedication", apparently from a later time: "I have purchased it in Hague for 13 gold pieces, the 18th of Elul 1786, Hirsh son of Yissachar".
R. Shaul HaLevi, Rabbi of Hague (Otzar HaRabbanim 17964) was an illustrious Torah scholar, descendant of a prominent family, related to the great R. Heshel of Krakow. The book Binyan Shaul with his teachings has recently been printed. His wife, Rebbetzin Dinah, was the daughter of R. Aryeh Leib, Rabbi of Rzeszów and Amsterdam (son of R. Shaul, Rabbi of Krakow and son-in-law of the Chacham Zvi) and sister of Rabbi R. Shaul Rabbi of Amsterdam, author of Binyan Ariel. Rebbetzin Dinah, who was privileged to know her grandfather the Chacham Zvi in his lifetime, was an exceptionally learned and pious woman, renowned for her extraordinary knowledge of Torah and for her great wisdom. The Chida visited their home on a visit to Hague in Sivan 1778 and was much impressed with the rebbetzin. He wrote (in the book recording his travels titled Ma'agal Tov) that "She is wise and very modest" and related an anecdote portraying her cleverness and his wonder at her shrewd and concise responses (Toldot HaChida by R. M. Krengil, at the beginning of the book Shem HaGedolim, Ot 3).
[1], 32, 91 leaves (without the engraved half-title page which appears in a few copies). A leaf was bound at the end of the book which is not part of this machzor [perhaps due the Proops printer's device in the margin?]. 18 cm. Good condition. Stains. Contemporary leather binding with gilt embossments - adornments and inscriptions. Wear and damages to binding and spine.
