A long interesting letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Gershonowitz, head of the Tiferet Zion Yeshiva. Bnei Brak, Kislev 1939. Written to the managers of the Ezrat Torah fund in the US, with a request for help "to have compassion for him and on his family who are really suffering from hunger", due to the financial state of the yeshiva, and his low salary. He also requests aid in marrying his daughter: "And now I have made a match for my daughter with a very excellent young man of the Hebron Yeshiva, he is really one of the best there, and the time has come for them to get married, but to my sorrow, I cannot conclude the matter…", due to his difficult financial state. In the letter, he also writes of his past and of his appointment as head of the Tiferet Yeshiva according to the "approbation of the author of the Chazon Ish". Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Gershonowitz (1888-1954), Rabbi of Zavinka in the Brisk region (Poland-Lithuania), in the autumn of 1935 ascended to Eretz Israel and was appointed head of the Tiferet Zion Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. The match and engagement of his daughter Chava Esther with Rabbi Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz took place in mid-1939 [by the advice of the Chazon Ish], but the wedding was held only in the month of Iyar 1940, on Lag BaOmer. His son-in-law Rabbi Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz (1913-2011), was born in Volozhin, studied at the Rameiles Yeshiva in Vilna by Rabbi Shlomo Heiman and ascended to Eretz Israel in 1935 and studied at the Hebron Yeshiva in Jerusalem. After his marriage, he began teaching at the Tiferet Zion Yeshiva [at that time he was supported by the Kollel in Petach Tikva where he studied]. After a while, he was appointed head of the yeshiva for younger boys (high-school age) of the Ponovezh Yeshiva, a position he held for almost 70 years. He was renowned as one of the leading heads of yeshivas and Torah scholar in recent times. Official stationery, of the Tiferet Zion Yeshiva. 29 cm. Good-fair condition, minor tears.

Kahaneman". Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman (1887-1929) served in Lithuania as Rabbi of the city of Ponovezh and there he established a yeshiva and educational institutes. Long halachic responsum, handwritten and signed by Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. Jerusalem, Tevet 1973. The topic discussed in this responsum deals with a "deaf man who does not hear or speak and has learned to speak", and his status regarding the obligation to fulfill mitzvoth and the laws of a "ben da'at". This responsum caused a great stir at the time it appeared with its decision on a new issue which arose in the last generations. The Steipler mentioned this responsum in a letter in which he refers a question to "My mechutan Rabbi Elyashiv". Rabbi Elyashiv deferred this question to Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach for his opinion. The latter agreed with Rabbi Elyashiv's decision. This responsum was first printed in the Beit David anthology, Cholon 1984, by his son-in-law Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein. On the leaves offered here are handwritten inscriptions by Rabbi Zilberstein. Especially interesting is the inscription at the end of the responsum in which Rabbi Zilberstein tells of Rabbi Elyashiv's correction in preparation for printing. Written at the end of this responsum; "All this is the Halacha but practically speaking this is a general ruling and I do not wish to rule until leading rabbis give their opinion". About this, Rabbi Zilberstein writes: "And I asked him who he means and he said to ask Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach. And after he [Rabbi S.Z. Auerbach] agreed, he told me to copy the last leaf again on the typewriter and he wrote at the side – I have written that which seems correct in my lowly opinion, Yosef Shalom Elyashiv”. Indeed the printed version (in the Beit David compilation and in the Kovetz Teshuvot, Part 1, Siman 10) features only the words “I have written in my lowly opinion”, and the rest - that his ruling is l’halacha and not l’ma’ase (in practice), was omitted. Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910-2002), a leading Torah authority for more than 70 years, was known for his exceptional diligence and deep and thorough understanding of all facets of Torah. During the last 20 years of his life, he led Torah Jewry in Israel and abroad. However, even earlier he was involved in rabbinic and halachic matters of various communities. Rabbi Elyashiv did not print his Torah novellae by himself but his disciples printed the “comments” from his lectures thereby compiling hundreds of his thousands of responsa in four volumes of Kovetz Teshuvot. 8 closely written pages, varied size, the first leaf is written on official stationery. Good condition, stains.

Letter of Torah, dealing with Tractate Zevachim, in the handwriting of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, to his father-in-law Rabbi Y.S. Elyashiv. "My teacher, my father-in-law, the famed great gaon Rabbi Y.S. Shlita", signed: "His son-in-law ben Rabbi Y.Y. Shlita." Zichron Meir [Bnei Brak], Tevet 1953. Between the lines are (penciled) notes of Torah thoughts, in the handwriting of Rabbi Elyashiv, a draft of his response to this letter. On the reverse side is an interesting family letter, handwritten and signed by his wife, Rebbetzin Bat-Sheva. She mentions her eldest daughter [Rebbetzin Chana Steinman], her brother Moshe'le [Rabbi Moshe Elyashiv, Rabbi of Tiferet Bachurim who in his youth studied at the Tiferet Zion Yeshiva in Bnei Brak and lived at that time in the home of his older sister]. She relates that Rabbi Chaim studies with him daily for a few hours. She inquires as to the health of her father and mother, the other children and her grandmother [Rebbetzin Chaya Musha, mother of Rabbi Y.S. who died in the month of Iyar 1954]. She especially asks that "someone from home, come" to visit them in Bnei Brak. Leaf, 19.5 cm. Approximately 20 lines handwritten by Rabbi Chaim, about 9 lines in the handwriting of Rabbi Elyashiv and about 22 lines in the handwriting of Rebbetzin Bat-Sheva. Fair condition, creases and wear.
