"Mitzpe, monthly journal with articles dealing with Jews and Judaism yesterday and today, including illustrations and pictures. Four booklets for four months of 1885, published by Alexander Halevi Zederbaum". Zvi Hirsh Piness printing press, St. Petersburg, 1886.
A volume compiling four issues of the monthly "Mitzpe" edited by Alexander Halevi Zederbaum, Jewish author and journalist, founder of "HaMelitz" periodical.
The volume contains essays, stories and poems about Judaism, Jewish congregations and Eretz Israel, by some of the outstanding figures of the Haskala period, incuding Yehiel Michal Pines, Zvi HaCohen Shershevsky, Yehudah Leib Levin, Avraham Eliyahu Harkavy, Shneur Sachs, Naftali Herz Weisel, and others. Accompanied by several picture-plates: portraits of Moshe Montefiore, Dr. Eliezer Halevi, Baruch Spinoza, and others; illustrations of Eretz Israel sights (Jerusalem, Jaffa, Safed); Moses Montefiore's estate; and more.
It seems that Zederbaum did not manage to print each one of the four issues separately, and the content was compiled and re-arranged in the volume presented here (essays that originally appeared as a series in several issues, are arranged consecutively).Irregular pagination. Volume: 24 cm. Good condition. Stains. Several detached leaves. Loose binding, damaged. Ex-library copy. Ex-Libris label.

"HaZman, for all Jewish issues, for science, literature and political matters, published twice a week with four anthologies per year". St. Petersburg, January-March, 1903. Volume of first year issues.
Issues no. 1-16 (in 14 booklets; two double issues). Essays, stories and poems by H.N. Bialik, David Frishman, Micha Yosef Berdichevsky, Mordechai Ben Hillel Hacohen, Uri Nisan Gnessin, Dvora Baron, and others.
"HaZman", a periodical dealing with literary and political matters, was founded in 1903 by Ben-Zion Katz, journalist, author and historian, born in Lithuania. At first it was published in St. Petersburg, twice a week. At a later stage it was published daily. Due to financial difficulties the editorial staff of the paper had to move to Vilnius (Pale of Settlement). The paper discontinued publication in 1915, when WW I broke out, after being transferred to the supervision of military censorship.
Ben-Zion Katz aimed at uncovering and combatting the Russian government's treatment of the Jews. He adopted an assertive policy, unlike Jewish journalism of his time, confronted censorship and overstepping the boundaries of publication. “HaZman” was the first newspaper to print articles on the pogrom which occurred in Kishnev in April 1903. In 1905, it was the first to publish the exact wording of the Russian constitution after the revolution, and in 1906 it published, in defiance of a gag order issued by the Russian authorities, the ‘Vyburg Declaration’ of the exiled Russian Duma, which called for civil disobedience against the Tsar’s tyranny. In view of such publications Katz was named by the prize committee of the “Sokolov Prize (1956) “the forefather of scoops in the Hebrew press “. 14 issued bound together, 30.5 cm. Fair-good condition. Damp staining. Tears, mainly to first and to last issues. Torn binding in poor condition. Ex-library copy.
