"Tenuvat HaAretz", four painted ceramic tiles. [Israel, late 1950s / early 1960s]. Unknown artist.
Four painted ceramic tiles, on a wooden board. Signed: Handmade in Israel (on the wooden frame).
Fine colorful illustrations portraying two women workers in a beautiful field, one holding a basket with oranges and the other a pickaxe. Mountains, trees and houses with red roofs are seen in the background. The inscription "Tenuvat HaAretz" appears on the lower part.
Illustrations on the tiles were inspired by illustrations on banknotes issued by the Bank of Israel, designed by Shamir Brothers and Jacob Zim. The woman's figure on the left bears resemblance to the soldier seen on the half a Lira banknote, while the woman on the right stands in almost the same position as the worker appearing on the five Lirot banknote (hammer on her left shoulder while the worker holds it on his right shoulder. They face different directions); her face and hat resemble those of the pioneer appearing on the fifty Lirot banknote.
Four tiles: 19X19 cm each. Mounted on a wooden board, with wooden frame (not examined out of frame). The board (including the frame): 42X40.5 cm. Good condition.

Five plates – sketches for Half Israeli Lira - banknote with the image of a Nahal (pioneer fighting youth)-woman soldier:
1. Two original illustrations, sketches for the NAHAL woman-soldier. Gouache on paper.
• Illustration which was rejected in which the woman-soldier holds in her hand a sickle and a sheaf of wheat. Shamir Brothers Studio ink-stamp. 13X15 cm.
• Illustration on which the final design was based, portraying the woman-soldier holding a basket with oranges, on the background of fields. 16.5X15 cm.
2. Eleven preparatory photos for the figure of the woman-soldier. Two photos 11.5X15.5 cm and nine • photos 5.5X5.5 cm.
3. Design proposals (photos), of various stages of the banknote’s design.
• Original design of Shamir Brothers which won the banknotes series design competition. On the obverse appears the figure of a farmer sowing seeds and on the reverse – a roaring lion on an ancient Hebrew seal found in Megiddo (image which also appeared on the final version of the banknotes – reverse of 5 Lira note).
• Second design version, prepared according the advisory committee request, where the farmer’s figure was replaced by the woman-soldier.
• Third draft of the obverse – approved by the committee. On the reverse appear signatures of committee members. Final draft for printing. In previous drafts the value was five hundred Pruta. Here the value was changed to Half a Lira.
• A printed banknote in its final version.
4. Three photos of pencil-sketches – instructions for printers. The value was later changed to Half a Lira. One photo 13X17 cm, two photos: 11X19 cm.
5. Seven photos of drafts of the banknote’s reverse. Amongst them two photos of pencil-sketches.
In all, except for one, appears the roaring lion (of the Megiddo seal). 7X13 cm to 18X11.5 cm.
“The original decision was that the four figures would be male. Once the proposal of the Shamir Brothers was approved, committee members realized that there was no representation of women nor the army among the figures symbolizing the national ethos. The solution was intended to ‘kill two birds with one stone’: The theme of agriculture was incorporated into that of the army through the Nahal, with the female figure providing a solution to the representation of women. In addition, the woman-soldier’s image on the note emphasized the status of the woman as an equal partner in the Zionist enterprise”.
Overall good condition. Most sketches are detached from boards; glue marks. Labels printed in English are pasted to four boards, annotating the sketches.

Three plates – sketches for Five Israeli Lirot banknote, with a figure of a laborer:
1. • Original sketch - early sketch for the banknote obverse. Gouache and pasting on heavy paper. First version of the laborer's figure, prior to the realistic drawing according to photos. 27X15 cm, in passe-partout. • Two photos - drafts of the obverse (according to illustration) 14X8 cm, 7.5X13.5 cm.
2. • Preparatory photo for the laborer's figure. 12X14 cm. • Original illustration (gouache on paper) created according to the photo. 13X14 cm. • Photo of an additional illustration created according to the photo. 13X14 cm. • Photo of a pencil-sketch for printing the obverse and photo of the banknote's draft. 8X14 cm. In all the above – the laborer's figure is different from the figure that finally appeared on the banknote.
3. • Two preparatory photos for the laborer's figure (different model). 8X11 cm, 7.5X11 cm. • Photo of an illustration of the laborer's figure. 8X7.5 cm. • Sketch for banknote's obverse. Pencil on semi-transparent paper. 12X18 cm. • Photo of banknote's obverse draft. 14X8 cm. • Final version of printed banknote. 14X8 cm. Final illustration of the laborer's figure is a combination of the two models (the cap and the body of the first model and the face of the second model).
"In the eyes of some of the committee members, the original photograph of the laborer was reminiscent of a British worker, and in the eyes of others – of a Soviet one. The question of the laborer's identity was eventually determined only after the intervention of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who thought it inconceivable that all men would be of Ashkenazi origin. Ben-Gurion…proposed that the laborer's image would be that of a Yemenite with side-locks. Eventually it was decided to perpetuate on the note an image of a typical Sephardic (or in current terminology 'Oriental') worker".
Overall good condition. Foxing marks on the two original illustrations (mainly on the second illustration). Some of the sketches are detached from boards.
