"Tents", drawing on parchment, created by Shlomo Yedidya Seelenfreund, inspired by a poem by Mordechai Avi-Shaul. Jerusalem, 1928.
Ink on parchment.
The drawing features three tents at night, lit by moonlight. The verses of the poem "Ohalim" [Tents] by Mordechai Avi-Shaul (1898-1998 – poet, author, critic and Hebrew translator), in the spirit of the Third Aliyah, are written on the three tents.
The illustration is bordered by a decorated frame: on the right margins are rectangular shapes consisting of the characters "Ohel". The decorations on the upper margins as well as on the lower and left margins also refer to the shape of a tent.
Shlomo Yedidya Seelenfreund drew several paintings inspired by poems by Mordechai Avi-Shaul who was married to his first-born daughter, Leah.
A dedication by Seelenfreund appears on the upper part: "My greeting is sent to my beloved teacher, Rabbi Meir Zvi Dr. Weiss and I expect to see him soon in Eretz Israel, Shlomo Yedidya Seelnfreund , Pesach, 1928"; signed and dated on the lower part: "created by Shlomo Yedidya Seelenfreund – Jerusalem – 1928".
For additional information about Seelenfreund see "Kedem" catalogue no. 35, lot no. 70 and "Kedem" catalogue no. 31, lot no. 263.
Length: 25 cm, width: 21 cm. Good condition. Stains. Frame: 37.5X32 cm. Not examined outside of the frame.
