Lot 488 Shevach Ve'Zimra – On the Salvation of the Possano Community During the Napoleon Wars – 1797

Opening: $300

"This is a book of praise and song in this holy Jewish community of Possano on the miracle our Great G-d has performed for us… the fourth night of Pesach". [Italy, 1797].
In 1796, Napoleon conquered Northern Italy. During the battle between the French and the Austrians, the Jews of that region were attacked by their non-Jewish neighbors and their property was plundered. This happened also in Possano, when the city residents raided the Jewish ghetto in the course of the French siege. The Jews closed themselves in the synagogue waiting for salvation, which came at dawn, when a French shell landed on the synagogue steps chasing away the rioters. In memory of this event, a poem (of 36 stanzas) was printed with a description of the miracle. ["In 1797, during the war, this place was filled with terror… the fourth night of Pesach… was changed to dread… while outside the French were battling to enter the city… armed men gathered, thieves of various sorts.. The whole community was trembling lest the enemy enter the Coveted House… The morning dawned and all the plunderers ran away petrified…"]. Mentioned in the introduction, which has additional details of the event, is the community regulation to read this poem every year in memory of the miracle. In the last line of the poem, the word Avraham is emboldened hinting to the name of the composer [maybe the rabbi of the place]. This copy has several handwritten corrections.
[6] leaves. 17 cm. Good condition, stains. Library stamps. Nice binding.
Rare. This booklet, printed on coarse paper with fragmented lettering, had apparentlya few copiesprinted, only for the members of the Possano community.

Seder Chinuch Ben Yehudit, booklet 1 – Public appeal for establishment of ‘educational institution for Jewish youth’ with ‘treasury of Jewish books’. Oradea-Mare [Grosswardein], [1920]. Stencil of photocopy of manuscript.
Enthusiastic appeal for establishment of apolitical “educational institution” in which Torah would be studied in the Hebrew language, in accordance with an organized progressive program. The writer bases this upon instruction of the Sages ‘At the age of five years one should study the Scriptures, at ten the Mishnah…” and he quotes various sources supporting the system. The writer debates with opposers to his system and criticizes the present situation in the community.
“… what will be with all students of the seminar? What will become of all students whose main focus is the study of folklore and are satisfied with a bit of scripture under the guise of reverence of G-d? … the community is not poor and there are plenty of funds available for the establishment of an educational institution for Jewish youth… where G-d-fearing teachers will speak only Hebrew… because speaking in Hebrew is a Mitzvah…”.
Booklet signed “on behalf of natives of city, 'Jövendo’ editorial staff… 1920…”. Jövendo was a Jewish periodical in Hungarian language, published by association for settlement of Eretz Israel in the city, edited by Rabbi Shlomo Fuchs. [Stamps of periodical].
Booklet, [32] pages. 23 cm. Good condition, few stains and tears. Detached leaves.

Starý židovský hřbitov pražský (Ancient Jewish Cemetery of Prague), printed album. By Luboš Jeřábek. Prague, 1903.
Contains an extensive preface [in Czech], colored illustration and dozens of photographs of the ancient Jewish cemetery of Prague. In the photographs, the tombstones of the leaders of the city of Prague from past generations can be seen: Rabbi Avigdor Kara, the Maharal of Prague, Rabbi David Oppenheim, Rabbi David Ganz etc.
The Jewish cemetery of Prague is the oldest preserved cemetery in Europe. It has been used at least from the first half of the 15th century [the tombstone of Rabbi Avigdor Kara who died in 1439 is preserved there], but some claim that it was established hundreds of years before. The site has approximately 12,000 tombstones, but the assessment is that throughout the generations about 100,000 people have been buried there, and due to crowding, they are buried in layers, one on top of another.
5-38, [2] pages + 23 photograph plates. 30 cm. Good condition, slight wear. Original binding.
The copies of the wording on the tombstones in the Prague cemetery were brought in the book “Gal Eid” by R' Kalman Liban, Prague 1856.
