Schor, Yehoshua Heshel [ed]. HeChalutz. Lvov, Breslau, Frankfurt Am Main, Prague and Vienna, 1852-1889.
Complete set of thirteen booklets in four volumes, including a copy of the first edition of the first issue which, as Dr. Mehlman writes, "was almost completely obliterated" and later reprinted as a second edition.
The Hebrew periodical "HeChalutz" was published intermittently, edited by Yehoshua Heshel Schor (1818-1895) and contained essays, Jewish studies research, extreme crticisim on the Talmud, the Halacha and the Rabbis, historical articles, literature passages, etc. The publication of this periodical was initiated by Schor and his friend, the writer and satirist Yitzchak Arter who composed the articles "The history of HeChalutz" which appeared in the first issue and explained the necessity of such a periodical. Amongst the other writers: Avraham Krochmal, Yitzchak Shmuel Ragio, Moshe Steinshneider, Avraham Geiger and others; Schor himself composed the complete content of the last issues. "HeChalutz" was known for its extreme criticism against the Orthodox rabbis and against moderate intellectuals. Many intellectuals disagreed with HeChalutz and published criticism against it. Four volumes, 22.5 cm. Condition varies, generally in good condition. From the collection of Dr. Israel Mehlman.
