Four medals minted to commemorate Admiral Sydney Smith's success in fighting off Napoleon's army in Acre during the battle of 1799. [England, ca. 1820]. 1-2. Silver medal and bronze medal. Obverse: Admiral Sydney Smith portrait, inscription "Admiral Sir S. Smith" and maker's mark: Mudie D. Reverse: Allegorical relief – British lion defending Syrian camel against French tiger. Inscription: "Acre Defended, Bonaparte Repulsed, Syria Saved", and the date. Diameter: 40 mm. 3. Bronze medal. Obverse: Smith's portrait, inscription: "Sr. W. Sydney Smith, Captain of the Tigre of 74 Guns". Reverse: British Navy vessels (commanded by Smith) next to the shores of Acre. Inscription:" Repulsed Bonaparte in 11 Attacks, Made by him, on Acre 1799". Diameter: 40 mm. 4. Brass medal, [early 19th cent.]. Obverse: Smith's portrait and inscription: "Admiral Sir S. Smith". Reverse: Text – "Acre Defended, Bonaparte Repulsed, Syria Saved, 20 may 1799". Diameter: 25 mm.
