A large sketch for a "membership certificate" of the "Association of the Hebrew Gymnasium in Palestine", made by the artist Jacob Stark, a Bezalel student. Jerusalem, [1906].
Ink on thick paper. Signed: "J. Stark, Bezalel, Jerusalem" (Hebrew).
A sketch for a certificate presented to "founding members" who donated 250 Francs for the foundation of the "Herzliya" Hebrew Gymnasium in Jaffa. On the right appears the figure of Moses holding a book under his arm, and on the left – the figure of Jacob; on the top appear illustrations of scientific instruments on the background of a rich library, and on the bottom, two silhouettes depicting the towns of Jaffa (viewed from the sea) and Jerusalem, flanking the emblem of the "Association of the Hebrew Gymnasium in Palestine", integrating the seven-branched Menorah.
In the center of the sketch is a text describing the aim of the organization: "To found a Hebrew school which will give its students, in addition to national education, practical, commercial education in the junior and higher grades, to prepare them for the university and the polytechnic".
The "Herzliya" Hebrew Gymnasium – the first Hebrew high school – was established in Jaffa in 1905 under the name "The Hebrew Gymnasium" (HaGymnasia HaIvrit). In 1909 the school was relocated to Herzl Street in Tel-Aviv and was renamed after Herzl. During the first year it operated as a private school in the home of Dr. Yehudah Leib Metmann-Cohen and his wife, and the second year was opened in October 1906 with about 40 students; it was then reported in the newspaper "Hashkafa" (edited by Eliezer Ben-Yehudah): "about twenty founding members gathered in Jaffa, each one donating 250 Francs, and thus the keystone was placed for the 'Gymnasium fund'. A supervising committee of seven people was elected among the founding members…"; from this citation can be assumed that the certificate printed after this sketch was awarded to the 20 founding members only.
The artist, Jacob Stark (1881-1915), painter and typographer, was born in Poland. He immigrated to Palestine in 1906 and was one of the first Bezalel students. This sketch was one of the first works he created in Palestine.
Approx. 70.5X51.5 cm. Fair-poor condition. Many creases and fold lines. Long tears. Open tears and a large piece missing in the right margin (affecting the sketch). Pieces of tape on verso. A number of comments in pencil.

Two reports of the Committee for Assistance of Jewish Exiles from Palestine and Syria (bound together), one for the period between 20.12.1914 and 30.06.1915 and the second for 1917. The reports discuss the situation of the Jewish exiles in Egypt and include a list of committee members, statistical information related to the exiles, a list of donors, information regarding the distribution of donations, and more.
When the Ottoman Empire joined World War I alongside the Central Powers, all subjects of the Entente Powers in Palestine became enemy subjects, and were required to accept Ottoman citizenship or leave the country. The Committee for Assistance of Jewish Exiles from Palestine and Syria was established in Egypt that year to support the Jews who were exiled from Palestine.
First booklet: 40 pp. Second booklet: 23 pp. 21 cm. Both booklets, with their original covers, are bound together (conjoined with strips of tape; strip of tape on spine detached). Good condition. Stains. Some tears and minor blemishes. Library stamps.

Neue Grundlagen für den Aufbau des jüdischen Palästina [New Foundations for the Construction of Jewish Palestine], by. Berlin: Orient, [1924?]. German.
The booklet deals with the new Jewish settlement in Palestine, offering solutions on housing and employment, immigration and integration, agriculture, trade and industry. Trietsch introduces the idea of "garden cities" (a method of urban planning based on small family industries and farms within the urban space), which he propagated at Zionist congresses and in his writings. The booklet features 6 sketches of buildings and residential complexes and an addendum-article titled "Money or Plan?" (Geld oder Plan?).
Davis (David) Trietsch (1870-1935), editor, writer and Zionist activist, born in Germany, was a member of the Zionist General Council and a member of the democratic faction in the World Zionist Organization (an oppositional faction in the Zionist Organization which introduced an alternative to Herzl's ideas). He dedicated a considerable part of his time to the question of Jewish settlement and suggested to settle Jews in Cyprus as an alternative to the Uganda Scheme. He also translated and published poetry and prose, edited the journals Ost und West and Palästina, authored the annual Palästina Handbuch and was one of the founders of the Jüdischer Verlag publishing house.
15 pp. (including cover), 21.4 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains, including dampstains. Creases; small holes and tears (some open) to margins. Margins trimmed close to text (slightly affecting pagination). Cover partly detached. Inked stamp on front cover.

Perpetual trophy for the winners of the HaPoel national swimming championship, issued by "HaChevel HaYami LeIsrael" (a maritime training association). Designed by Shalom Sebba (signed on verso: "Sebba"). Palestine, 1942.
Trophy in the form of a plate, with a relief of a swimmer in its center, topped by the Hebrew inscription "HaPoel National Swimming Championship". Engraved with the logo of "HaChevel HaYami LeIsrael", and the Hebrew inscriptions "Gift of HaChevel HaYami LeIsrael, 1942", "1942, 1943, 1944, Jordan Valley" (these are presumably the competitions during which the trophy was awarded).
"HaChevel HaYami LeIsrael" was an association for marine training established in 1936. It founded a maritime school, dedicated itself to the development of the fishing industry, promoted swimming lessons and was one of the founders of the ZIM shipping company.
Siegfried Shalom Sebba (1897-1975), painter, stage designer, sculptor, photographer and book-illustrator. Born in Prussia, he acquired his artistic training in Königsberg and Berlin. Immigrated to Palestine in 1936. A pre-Canaanite artist, Sebba's work was characterized by rotund, heavy figures and objects, emphasized by solid, clear contours. In 1967 he moved to Germany, where he lived until his death.
Copper, partially plated with silver-toned metal; raised and hammered. Diameter: approx. 34 cm. Good condition. Plating on front worn and partially missing. Warping.
