Large engraved map of Palestine and its surroundings; on its margins, thirteen small illustrations of views and sites of Palestine and Lebanon. Several of the borderlines are hand-colored.
The map is dedicated to the cartographer Pierre Jacotin and the Swiss Orientalist Johann Burckhardt.
Approx. 66.5X100.5 cm. (two sheets attached to each other). Good condition. Creases and several small tears to margins. A few stains.

A large map of Palestine, from surveys made for the French and English governments – engraving, partially hand-colored, by British artist Josiah Neele (1804-1876). This biblical map depicts Palestine from the Litani River in the north to the Sinai Peninsula and Lower Egypt in the south. The small insets detail Jerusalem and the Temple. The illustrations depict the large square of Cairo, the pyramids and the sphinx in Egypt and Jesus and the Samaritan women by the well. The map is framed by the symbols of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
There are several slightly different versions of this map, the earliest of them is from 1828 (without the illustrations of Cairo and Egypt). See Laor 712.
100X84.5 cm (dissected to 32 panels), mounted to cloth and folded. Semi-leather cardboard cover. Good condition. Stains and minor blemishes. Stains on verso. Abbraisions and minor blemishes to cover.

10X14.5 cm. The lithographs are in good condition. Stains on verso. The cover is in fair-good condition; torn in its margins and reinforced with tape.

The booklet features fifteen pictures of well-known sites in Palestine – Jaffa, Jerusalem, Mount Zion, the Tower of David, the Western Wall, the Jordan River, Rachel's Tomb and more; on the facing pages, short explanations about each of the sites. At the end of the booklet, a picture that was printed without an explanatory page – a family in traditional attire in Bethlehem.
The booklet is bound in a colorful cover with an additional title on its inside – "Souvenir of the occupation of Jerusalem, Views and accurate description of Jerusalem by the British Troops, Dec. 9th 1917" and a picture of Absalom's Pillar on its verso.
