First edition of the German translation of Heimann Hurwitz's book Hebrew Tales, containing a selection of Aggadot and tales from the time of Chazal [our Sages].
Hyman [Heimann] Hurwitz (1770-1844) was a scholar and Talmudic researcher. In 1828, upon recommendation by his friend the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, he became the first Jewish professor at University College, London.
XIV, 244 pages, 18 cm. Good condition. Spotting and creases. Minor tears to margins. Ink-stamp on title page. Worming to last leaves and back wrapper. Original wrapper, slightly worn, with tears to spine and edges (mostly insignificant).

The booklets were printed continuously in the years 1917-1918 and were bound together in the volume presented here in 1919. Separate title page for each booklet; additional title page at the opening of the volume.

A Hebrew translation of the play "Esther" by the French playwright (staged for the first time in 1689). The translator, Rabbi Shlomo Yehudah Rapoport (1790-1867), was one of the Haskalah movement members in Galicia, of the founders of Chochmat Israel, and rabbi of Tarnopol and Prague.
Corrections and short handwritten comments appear on a number of leaves. An inscription was added on the title page – "Proofread according to the author's comments".
