Aldgate Ward with its Divisions into Precincts & Parishes according to a New Survey.
Map of Aldgate Ward, engraving by Cole Benjamin, a print out of the book "The History and Survey of London from its Foundation to the Present Time", by William Maitland. London, 1756.
Two synagogues appear on the map: Bevis Marks Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Britain, and Hambro's Synagogue. On both sides of the map appear illustrations of two Aldgate churches: St. James Duke's Place and St. Katherine Coleman.
A dedication is printed on the bottom, to a council member of Aldgate, Robert Scott: "This Plan is most humbly inscribed to Robert Scott Esq. Alderman of Aldersgate Ward".

The engraving is probably out of the German edition of the book 'Reise nach dem Morgenlande' by Louis Nicolas Philippe Auguste de Forbin, printed in Prague in 1824.
Approx. 26X35 cm. Fair-good condition. Extensive foxing. Some tears and an open tear at margins of leaf not affecting the plate. Dark margins.

The synagogue in Brondesbury neighborhood in London was designed by Frederick William Marx and constructed between the years 1904-1905. The prints were first published in the periodical "The Architect", published between the years 1869-1900. The prints show the façade and the interior of the synagogue according to the architect's drawings. The synagogue was set on fire in 1964 and was completely destroyed.
