"Praktikumsbericht" [report of activity], a typewritten document containing a description of the activity of a shelter (Lehrlingsheim) and the Basel relief organization for emigrant children (Basler Hilfswerk für Emigrantenkinder), by Eli mangold. [Basel, the 1940s]. German.
In 1939, 300 boys and girls from Germany found refuge in Switzerland in what was titled the "300 Kinder-Aktion". Fifty of them, who came from orthodox houses, were taken under the wing of the Sterns (a couple who had also escaped Germany). At first, the group resided in an institution in the city of Langenbruck, later finding a home in Basel, where they remained until the end of the war.
The first part of the document before us describes in detail the daily life (living arrangements, studies, work, and more) of those fifty boys and girls from Germany. The second part of the document describes Eli Mangold's work in the Basel relief organization for emigrant children (Basler Hilfswerk für Emigrantenkinder). Among others, Mangold writes about his work with the adoptive parents and the refugee children and describes the difficulties he had to cope with.
