Three Jewish medals. Belgium, 19th century.
1. A medal made on behalf of the "Belgian Liberals" in honor of the author Eugène Sue, author of the "Wandering Jew". Belgium, 1845. Maker: Laurent Joseph Hart.
Obverse: Eugène Sue's portrait and an inscription in French: LES LIBÉRAUX BELGES A EUGÈNE SÜE" [ Belgian Liberals tribute to Sue]. Marked: Hart Janv 1845. Reverse: quill pen surrounded by titles of four compositions, among them the "Wandering Jew". At the edges appears the inscription: "Sa Plume Foudroie l'Hydre Qui Brava Rome et Les Rois" [his pen struck the Hydra, defying Rome and the Kings]. Diameter: 53 mm.
2. Medal made in honor of the Jewish doctor Simon Lubin.
Obverse: Lubin's portrait. Signed: J. Leclerq F. [Julien Gabriel Leclerq]. Reverse: Dedication in French. Brussels, April 1835. Diameter: 48 mm.
3. Medal made in memory of Louis Jacobs, 1803-1847, Belgian attorney, judge and Congress Member.
Obverse: Jacobs' portrait. Marked: Hart Fecit. Reverse: Dedication in French: "For his contribution to business, the arts, public education and industry", surrounded by an inscription: "Congrès national, commission mixte de navigation, consiel communal d'anvers" [one of the Belgian congress committees in which Jacobs was active.]. Diameter: 53 mm.
