Rabbi Elyahu Ba'al Shem of Luantz (1565-1636) learned in the yeshiva of the Maharal of Prague, and was involved in the study of kabala and writing amulets. He arrived in Basel after leaving his community in Frankfurt am Main, and published this book because "when something is written in a book, it is as if it has been spoken to thousands and myriads".
