9 photographs of Jewish artists in the Lodz Ghetto. 1930s - 40s.
Unique photographs of Lodz artists prior and during the Holocaust, while they lived in the ghetto. All are annotated in pen on the reverse: "In the atelier of Szylis, 1930"; "In Szylis's home", "HaShomer HaTza'ir" training group 1939?" The names of the photographed artists are included: Maurici Trembach on death-bed in the Lodz ghetto, late 1940 (next to him is the artist Zvi Hirsch Szylis with a Yellow Star on his garment), artist Jacob Meitler (1897-?), photographer Mendel Grossman (1917-1945) who perpetuated the ghetto with his camera and was active for the Judenrat, Zvi Hirsch Szylis (1909-1987) himself, and others. One photograph was taken in Tel Aviv in 1927 and annotated by hand in an identical handwriting to that which appears on all of the other photographs. 14X9 cm (except for the last one), good condition. Divided on the reverse for use as postcard.
