Georges (Jiří) Kars (1880-1945), A Steet in Saint-Tropez, France, 1928. Charcoal on Paper. Signed and dated. 20X27 cm. Good condition. Stains. Matted. Georges Kars (Jiří Karpeles; 1880-1945), was born in Kralupy, Bohemia, the Austrian Empire. He started his studies in Prague, then in Munich under the painter Franz von Stuck and others. In 1908, after short periods in Prague and Madrid, he settled in Montmartre, Paris, where he belonged to the circle of Montmartre artists and the Paris School of Art. Later, he lived and worked intermittently in Spain and France. In 1942, escaping the Nazis, he fled to Switzerland. Upon hearing the news about his family's murder, he committed suicide.
