Advertising poster for the screening of the movie "De Cohen's en Kelly's in Parijs" ("The Cohens and the Kellys in Paris") at Theater Tuschinski. Rotterdam: v. Staal & Co Press, [1928?]. Design: Pieter den Besten (signed in the plate).
Impressive, Art Nouveau-style advertising poster, printed in vibrant colors, for the screening of the American comedy film "The Cohens and the Kellys in Paris" at Theater Tuschinski.
Theater Tuschinski opened in Amsterdam in 1921, at the initiative of the Jewish-Polish businessman Abraham Icek Tuschinski. The movie theater was designed to represent the spirit of the age, employing Art Nouveau, Art Deco and the Amsterdam School, and was considered at the time one of the most beautiful movie theaters in the world. The posters and programes of the movie theater were also designed in modern art styles, often by renowned artists and designers – Elias Ott, Jacob Jongert and others.
This advertising poster was designed by the artist, sculptor and graphic designer Pieter den Besten (1894-1972), house designer of Theater Tuschinski.
The movie "The Cohens and the Kellys in Paris" (1928) was the second in a series of films about the rivalry between the Cohen family and the Kelly family, one Jewish and the other Irish-Catholic, who live one next to the other in New York. The movie earned a place in cinematic history due to a lawsuit that was filed by the creators of another movie with a similar plot, after which the court ruled that archetypical characters are not protected by copyright laws (the case was known as Nichols v. Universal Pictures Corp.).
Approx. 65.5X38.5 cm. Good condition. Minor blemishes. Linen-backed for display and preservation.
