Yemenite Bracelet – "Tombs" – For Childbirth and Special Occasions
Opening: $250
Unsold
Bracelet. Yemen, early 20th century.
Silver; gem stones.
This kind of bracelet is called "Kebur", literally- "tombs". It is possible that the name of the bracelet derives from the structures with slanted roofs which might resemble oriental tombs. The bracelet consists of two raws of structures, four in each raw. In general, such bracelets are decorated with gem stones and such is the bracelet presented. Yemenite Jews interpreted the tomb motif as a reminder that death accompanies joyful moments of marriage and birth. Wearing the bracelet during festivities was also considered as a protection against evil eye.
Diameter: 7 cm. Good condition.
