A comprehensive collection of articles about the history, geography and archeology of Palestine and its surroundings, and about the Jewish, Muslim and Christian residents of the area, written by renowned British scholars (such as Charles Wilson, Henry Baker Tristram, Charles Warren and others). The articles are accompanied by 40 (steel) engraved plates, two large maps in color (a map of Palestine and a map of Sinai and Egypt) and many in-text illustrations (wood engravings). The engraved plates, depicting the views and inhabitants of Palestine and its surroundings, were made after works by Harry Fenn and John Douglas Woodward.

Rose de Jerusalem [Frankfurt-Jerusalem: Wilhelm Moses Shapira and Christian Friedrich Spittler, ca. 1860s].
Rose de Jerusalem, folding lithographic print depicting colorful roses and views of sites sacred to Jews and Christians alongside famous sites in Jerusalem. The views are captioned in English and French.
Such "Rose" prints were common in the 19th century, depicting sights from various cities around the world. The first Jerusalemite "Rose", known as "Shoshanta", was printed by Yoel Moses Solomon and Michel Hacohen. The two travelled to Europe in 1859 to study Torah; however, when they decided they needed a profession, they studied lithography in Königsberg and returned to Jerusalem with a lithography press. The first item they printed in 1862, after their return to Jerusalem, was the Rose de Jerusalem which depicted Jerusalem and holy sites in Palestine.
Soon, they had competition – the publisher and antiques dealer Wilhelm Moses Shapira, who was known for his forgery of antiquities, and Christian Friedrich Spittler, founder of the St. Chrischona Pilgrim Mission in Basel (which sent Johan Ludwig Schneller, the founder of the Syrian orphanage in Jerusalem, to Palestine). Shapira and Spittler's rose, which was aimed at Christians and therefore depicted mainly sacred Christian sites in Jerusalem, was printed in Frankfurt and brought to Jerusalem after the printing of Solomon's and Hacohen's.
Enclosed with the rose is an envelope with a view of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, reading "Rose de Jerusalem"; "Vue de Jérusalem".

Mounted on verso of the leaves are pressed flowers, with text indicating their origin in five languages: Hebrew, English, German, French and Russian.
Color map of Palestine on both sides of the Jordan River, with the territories of the Tribes, printed on verso of title page. The last page features an illustration titled "Memorial of the Temple Ruins".
Elegant carved olive wood binding depicting the Dome of the Rock and reading "Jerusalem / Omar Moschee".
[11] leaves, 14.5X8.5 cm. Good overall condition. Several stains and minor blemishes. Edges slightly trimmed (slightly affecting text). Professionally restored, with new tissue guards.

75 chromolithographic cards depicting the holy sites of the various religions throughout Palestine. Each print is captioned in Russian, French and English (some are captioned in Italian as well). The cards are placed in an original card sleeve printed with the title and a Jerusalem cross.
The series was published by Boulos Meo, a store near the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem established in 1872 by a family of Italian origins. Initially a Persian carpet shop, the business eventually expanded to antiquities, postcards, photograph albums and other souvenirs from Palestine.
Cards: 13.5X9 cm. Good condition. Minor blemishes. Tears (including open tears) and wear to the sleeve.

About 115 early photographic and illustrated postcards, mostly undivided, depicting Jerusalem and its sites. Various publishers, Jerusalem, Germany and elsewhere, [late 19th century and early 20th century].
Most of the postcards were sent by mail and bear postmarks and postage stamps of Palestinian post offices from the Ottoman period (including many postmarks of the Austrian post office in Jerusalem). Several of the postcards also bear stamps of pre-WWI Palestine guesthouses and hotels – Grand New Hotel A&J Morcos; Howard's Hotel; Lloyd Hotel Fast & Co.; and more.
Publishers include: Fr. Vester, C. Brandes, Herman Hilger, Albina et Nicodème, L. Schoenecke and others.
Size and condition vary. Good overall condition.

Collection of Holy Land undivided postcards, all depicting views of Jerusalem and its surroundings. Various publishers, Palestine, Germany, France and elsewhere, [late 19th century and early 20th century].
About one hundred photographic and illustrated early undivided postcards depicting Jerusalem and its surroundings, including holy sites of all three Abrahamic religions – the Temple Mount, the Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque, Gethsemane, the stations of Via Dolorosa and the various churches; antiquities, from the Valley of Josaphat and to the Tower of David; central sites in the city – prominent gates, Mount of Olives, streets and markets; and local residents. Including a noteworthy "Gruss aus Jerusalem" postcard from 1898, depicting that year's snow in Jerusalem.
About half of the postcards were published in Palestine by various publishers, including Albina et Nicodème, Joseph A. Mitri, Fr. Vester & Co., S. Salman & Co., Pères Blancs Ste Anne, Antoine Sfeir, Boulos Meo, Palmer, Kappus & Co., L. Schoenecke and André Terzis & Fils.
Approx. 100 postcards, 14X9 cm on average. Good overall condition. Blemishes. Approx. 30 of the postcards were used.

Including a noteworthy photographic postcard depicting the Friday market in Safed, published by C.L. Miklasiewicz, who was the Austrian consular agent in Safed during the years 1906-1918.
