Philippson, PhD (1811-1889) was a Rabbi, editor and author. He was the creator of a very influential Jewish weekly, translated the Bible into German, and published poems, stories, plays and religious and social essays.

Zunz (1794-1886), learned German Jew and researcher of Judaism. Supported the need for Reform in Judaism, but objected to the Rabbis who led the reform movement at the time.
Beneath the portrait is a dedication with handwritten signature of Zunz, dated – 1864.
