Das Buch Ruth [Book of Ruth], sketch for a book with fourteen woodcuts by Ludwig Schwerin (1897-1983). [Berlin?], 1934. German.
Sketch for the "Book of Ruth" illustrated by Ludwig Schwerin. Fourteen thick sheets of paper; attached to each one is a woodcut by Schwerin, depicting a scene from the Book of Ruth. Below the woodcuts appear titles written by hand, in German (apparently in Schwerin's handwriting). Written below the first woodcut (title page of the book): "14 holz-Schnitte um Ludwig Schwerin, 1934" [14 woodcuts by Ludwig Schwerin, 1934].
The woodcuts were printed on tracing paper. All are signed in the plate, in monogram, and two are dated.
Apparently this book was never published.
[14] leaves. First leaf: 21 cm, all the other leaves: 25 cm. Good-fair overall condition. Stains on leaves and woodcuts (many stains on most of the woodcuts). Two woodcuts are partly detached from the leaves. Tear at upper corner of one of the woodcuts. Widthwise cuts made with a knife to most of the leaves, separating them to two parts. Several leaves are whole, and the two parts of some of the cut leaves are partly detached. Pieces of paper and adhesive tape are pasted to the cuts of two leaves. Inserted in a new cloth-covered folder, with a leather label on the front, inscribed "Das Buch Ruth".

Portfolio with one hundred lithographs by Hermann Struck - portraits of World War I war prisoners - and a booklet by the German anthropologist Felix von Luschan. Copy no. 30 out of a deluxe edition printed in fifty copies. The front cover of the booklet and the 100 lithographs are signed by Struck. Vellum Portfolio with gilt embossings.
In 1915 Struck joined the German army as a volunteer. First he served as an interpreter and censor, and later was transferred to the Russian front where he was in charge of Jewish affairs. During the years 1915-1916 Struck created portraits of prisoners in German camps, with the authorization and support of the German General Staff. In his work he documented different "types" of prisoners. For this project he turned to anthropologist Felix von Luschan who created a classification method for people by skin color and researched the "Physical Anthropology of Jews". The results of this joint project were compiled in this portfolio.
Booklet: [6], 27, [1] pp, 46.5 cm + [100] lithographs, 32X46.5 cm (in a thick paper cover, titled: "Steinzeichnungen"). Good overall condition. Slight stains and crease to some lithographs. Stains and tears to paper cover of the lithographs. The booklet: stains to cover and to first and last leaves, creases to bottom corners of the leaves and small tears to margins of last leaf. Slight stains and defects to portfolio. Closing bands of the portfolio are missing.

[Paris, 1714].
This engraving, plate no. 65 in the book, was created after a work by the Flemish-French painter Jean Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737) and depicts a Jewish woman bringing her merchandise to women in the Sultan’s harem (women were not permitted to leave the harem, but Jewish women were allowed to enter and served as intermediaries between the Sultan's women and the outside world). Signed in the plate: "P. Simonneau fil. Sculp ".
25X35.5 cm. Good condition. Slightly darkened margins, stained. One corner is damaged, with an open tear.
