Umbrella owned by Rabbi David Solomon Sassoon. Made by Brigg & Sons, England, early 20th century.
Wood; fabric; brass; 18K gold (marked).
Two ring-shaped decorations made of gold are attached to the hooked handle. One is inscribed with the name of the collector David Solomon Sassoon and a monogram (made of his initials); the other shows the Sassoon family emblem - a dove.
Length: 91 cm. Fair-good condition. The umbrella mechanism is in working order, but some of the sheets are loose. Wear.

Spice container belonging to Solomon David Sassoon. [Europe, early 20th century].
Cast and embossed silver; filigree. Unmarked.
Tower-shaped spice container, with pointed spire surmounted by a flag. On the tip of the spire, above the flag, is a small bird (its shape is highly reminiscent of the bird shape appearing in the Sassoon family's coat-of-arms). The container is made of filigree work and decorated with flags. The name of Solomon David Sassoon (1915-1985) is engraved on the base. Sassoon, son of the famous collector Rabbi David Sassoon, was a rabbi, scholar and philanthropist.
Height: 20.5 cm. Fair condition. Some bends. A number of flags and bells are missing.

Silver, filigree. Marked (Hebrew): "Bezalel Jerusalem" (on the base).
Container in the form of a flattened ball, screwed lid. At the top is a Star of David decoration hung with two chains ending in bell clappers. Engraved in the center of the container is the inscription (in Hebrew), "Blessed are Thou… Creator of many spices" in tiny, elegant script, with a miniature menorah-shaped decoration.
Height: 13 cm. Good condition. Slight bends.

Torah, Prophets and Writings, edited by Max Letteris. London, 1920. Bound in exquisite binding [created at "Bezalel"]. [Jerusalem, ca. 1920].
Repoussé silver, filigree; gemstones; sculpted ivory. Unmarked.
An ivory plaque in the shape of the Ten Commandments is inlaid on the front cover. Hammered around it are a pair of wings and a crown surrounded by delicate filigree decorations in vegetal motifs. On the spine are the inscriptions, in Hebrew, "Torah, Nevi'im u'Ktuvim" and "Yerushalem"; on the back cover is a seven-branched menorah. The quality of the work and its style are characteristic of decorated silver bindings made at the time at "Bezalel", usually according to designs created by Ze'ev Raban.
Length: 13 cm, width: 9 cm. Good overall condition. The Bible itself is in fair condition (tears and pastings). Bends and slight defects to silver binding, mostly to spine and buckle.

Cast, sawn and engraved silver (two flasks are marked); coral.
1. Pear-shaped flask perched on oval leg and decorated with a vegetal motif. Soldered to its sides are decorations in vegetal motifs surmounted by birds. Two original chains to which the plug was attached (now missing). Height: 10.5 cm. Good condition. Missing plug and gemstones decorating the birds' backs.
2. Hexagonal flask perched on dome-shaped leg and decorated with vegetal motifs. Soldered to the top of the flask are three decorations in vegetal motifs, surmounted by birds. Height: 15.5 cm. Good condition. Missing plug and gemstones decorating the birds' backs.

Wooden printing block with the Hebrew inscription "For the Commandment is a Lamp and the Teaching a Light" in stylized letters, with a pair of ornaments. This printing block was used to print a leaf with the Hanukkah blessings and the psalm "A Song at the dedication of the Temple" in Italy (probably Livorno) in 1841. A copy of the leaf is enclosed.
Block: 27.5X9 cm. Fair condition. Extensive worming. Suspension loop. Enclosed in fine box. Leaf: approx. 30X40 cm. Fair-poor condition. Many stains and tears, with damage to text and missing pieces, professionally restored.

Wooden board with handle for carrying, for use during a funeral ceremony. "Made thanks to the charity box of Hevra Kadisha in Prague" [Hebrew]. With two printed leaves [printed in Trnava, Slovakia, ca. 1920s].
Attached to one side of the wooden board is a leaf with the "Miktam of David" (Psalm 16). Attached to the other side is a leaf with the psalm "To the choirmaster, A psalm of the sons of Korah" (Psalm 49) (recited in the house of mourning). The title "Miktam of David" is printed in red ink.
Leaves: 25X16 cm. Board length (including handle): 39 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains (some dark) and wear to paper leaves. Defects to wooden board.
