Chiseled stone desk stand from the internment camps in Cyprus, [late 1940s].
Desk stand composed of three niches - two closed oblong niches with movable lids (affixed to wooden hinges), and an open niche (ashtray). One of the lids bears a relief Hebrew inscription reading "Kafrisin" (Cyprus).
Height: 4 cm. Length: 13.5 cm, width: 11.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Rubbing, chips with losses and restored fractures.

Ashtray on round base, with vegetal decorations. The side of the base is engraved with the Hebrew inscription "Kafrisin" (Cyprus).
Height: 3.5 cm. Base diameter: 13.5 cm. Good condition. Stains and rubbing. Some fractures (including around the engraved inscription).

Oblong wooden box. On the lid is a stone plaque decorated with an image of a ship at sea, surrounded by a frame and ornaments. One of the ornaments bears the engraved Hebrew inscription "Kafrisin" ["Cyprus"]. The sides of the box are decorated with chiseled stone tiles with geometric ornaments.
Height: 8 cm, length: 14 cm, width: 20 cm. Good condition. Slight damage to wood. Damage and fractures to stone (some chips with losses). Engraving on the base of the box.

Chess box from the internment camps in Cyprus, [1948].
Fine chess box. On the lid is a chess board, inscribed on the margins with the inscription "Souvenir from Cyprus / 1948" (Hebrew) and barbed wire. The inside of the box is lined with fabric. At the bottom is a handwritten inscription reading, "To Shayke, a souvenir from the Movement in Cyprus" (Hebrew).
The box contains a set of chess pieces (made of Bakelite). At the top of the black "king" piece is a white Star of David (decoration missing on white "king" piece).
Box: 15.5X15.5 cm. Height: 3 cm. height of game pieces: approx. 2 cm. Good condition. One black pawn missing. Slight defects to game pieces.

Heart-shaped box. On the external side of the lid is a chiseled flower basket with the letters bet and ayin on the sides. On the inner side of the lid is an etched dedication in Hebrew: "In everlasting memory, from Hirsch Sigmund and Sonia / Cyprus 29.IX.1948". Alongside the dedication, inside a diamond-shaped frame is a photograph - a portrait of Sonia Hirsch.
Height: 3 cm, length: 10 cm, width: 11 cm. Good condition. Rubbing and slight damage.

On the front binding is a decoration showing Rachel's Tomb. The first page of the album is illustrated by hand. At the top is an inscription reading "Souvenir from Cyprus" in Hebrew, beneath which is a map of the island. On the right is an illustration of a ship at sea; on the left are illustrations of a tent, a barbed-wire fence and a guard tower. The rest of the album leaves are blank.

"Al HaSaf" [On the Verge], weekly magazine of students and graduates of the Pinhas Rutenberg JDC Seminary for Guides in Cyprus. Cyprus, 1948-1949. Issues 1-25 (no more issues were printed).
The issues contain much information on life in the camps, articles on current events, reports on events in Palestine and literary and cultural items reflecting the spiritual life in the camps. Numerous illustrations in the issues. The weekly's logo, a pair of hands extended in greeting from the shore of Cyprus to the shore of Palestine, is decorated, on the release issue, with an illustration of a ship sailing for Palestine.
"As the Nazis were there - in the extermination camps in Transnistria, so the British are here - in the detention camps, where they wish to push us to despair… but they cannot… the air of Palestine is too close here, and it won't allow it" (Hebrew, from issue 21).
8-30 pp per issue (some are double issues), 31.5 cm. Bound with metal clip. Fair condition. Stains, mostly to last issue. Stamps. Filing holes. Tears to page margins. Worming.
