Babylonian Talmud, complete set, 19 volumes. With Piskei Tosfot, Rosh, Perush Mishnayot by the Rambam, Maharsha, Maharam Schiff, Me'ir Netiv. Zhitomir, 1858-1864. Printed by the grandsons of Rabbi Shapira.
Enclosed are three volumes of Rav Alfas (Nashim, Part 2. Nezikin without title page. Hilchot Bechorot and Challah by the Ramban with the Talmud Yerushalmi on Chulin), Zhitomir, 1860-1862.
Handwritten scholarly marginalia by two writers [the second writer comments on the glosses of the first writer]. All volumes have signatures, ownership inscriptions and stamps of Rabbi Chaim Meir Weintraub of Lodz, and his father Rabbi Shlomo Aharon son of Rabbi Avraham Shamai Weintraub, and lists of births and study itinerary for Yartzeits [on the last leaf of Seder Taharot. List of chapters of the Mishnah for study on Yartzeits according to the letters of the name "Shlomo ben Avraham Shamai"]. The glosses are on Tractates Berachot, Shabbat, Eruvin, Ketubot, Gittin, Kiddushin, Bava Kama, Sanhedrin, Shvu'ot, Makot, Zevachim, Menachot, Chulin and the Mishnah Taharot.
22 volumes. 38 cm. Original set (all the volumes originated from the same place, from the aforementioned owners from the city of Lodz, Poland). Varied condition of volumes, good-fair. Stains, worming and wear. Contemporary bindings, some damaged and missing.
The composition Meir Netiv by Rabbi Shabtai Cohen (descendant of the Shach) is supplemented to the end of the volumes of this edition of the Talmud. It was later omitted from the editions of the Talmud printed in Vilna, Warsaw and Lemberg. The Chazon Ish was very fond of the Zhitomir edition of the Talmud and praised studying from this edition in particular, due to the meticulousness of the publishers and their attitude towards the holiness of the Talmud, but even more so because of the composition Meir Netiv which was omitted from other editions.
